Who runs Canada’s airports?

Efficiency

The federal government owns the land. Local airport authorities run the airport*.

Who are local airport authorities? They’re non-share-capital corporations, which means no shareholders and no dividends. They operate as a business for the benefit of travellers, communities and Canadians.

Airports bring together many partners that keep the system moving and get Canadians and cargo where it wants to go. Transport Canada sets safety and security rules, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority oversees passenger and baggage screening, the Canada Border Services Agency handles travellers and shipments entering Canada, and NAV CANADA manages the airspace. Different roles, one connected system.

* Some airports are owned by the federal government and managed by non-profit corporations. Some are municipally owned and operated. Others are territorially owned and operated. A few are independently owned and operated.
